How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis works by lowering the barrier between the conscious and unconscious mind to create lasting changes to the movies of the mind.


Let's start with how we learn:


Think back to a time that you learned a new skill, before it was easy.


At first, you had to learn all the different moving parts. You probably had to think about each step of the process, remaining focused on all the moving parts until you practice enough that it felt like second nature, until it "clicked". At which point you could increase the difficulty, or add your own flare to it.


This process of learning a new skill, shows us how conscious actions become unconscious habits/skills. Now that the practice of driving has locked into your unconscious mind, you can drive and chat and not have to think about which pedal to push. Your mind created a movie so that anytime you had to drive, the movie would be played and you wouldn't even have to think about it.


These movies can be created for anything! Anxiety, fear, habits, skills, pain, chronic symptoms. The brain uses them to conserve energy and to protect you. (link to blog about movies and fear)


Hypnosis allows us to quiet the conscious mind and then communicate directly with the unconscious mind to reframe those movies that are no longer working for you. We do all of this through "trance".


What is Trance?


Trance is a deeply relaxed state of mind where you are more responsive to suggestions. You enter trance often: when you drive home from work and forget how you got there (autopilot), when you meditate, when you read a book and lose track of time, when you get so entrenched in your movie that you cry with the characters, when you're getting sleepy before bed (this is why infomercials are on at night!), when you get zoned out on your phone.


We will create this state of trance through breathing, focusing attention, guided visualization...all you have to do is sit there, I'll do the rest! (For a glimpse into what this feels like, click here to download a guided hypnosis)


While in trance, you will still be able to hear my voice, you will still be able to communicate with me, and you will be completely taken care of by your unconscious mind - your unconscious minds goal is to keep you safe at all times. It's kind of like we have just walked through the conscious mind, opened a door, and entered the unconscious. We're just exploring new territory!


Once you're there, we will use different techniques to work on those movies that you are ready to change. It's always very curious and playful, and might just feel like a focused, dream-like conversation. We may replay scenes, play director, explore positive intentions - wherever the mind takes us.


You will return to self with a sense of deep relaxation, feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Sometimes after you "wake up", you might not remember what happened during the session, or you may just feel good. Memories may come to you later one, or you might just see the changes unfold in your life - only then realizing the profound impact hypnosis has had on you.


Hypnosis gives you the tools to rewrite the stories of your mind and make lasting changes in the way you operate in your world.
